Weaning is the gradual process of introducing food to a baby and reducing a baby’s total dependence on milk.
However, it is still important for you to continue breastfeeding your baby or give about a pint of formula milk, until they are 12 months old. Other milk based products such as: yogurts, fromage frais and cheese also count towards daily intake of milk.
A baby should have a full and varied diet even before they start to enjoy family meals.
When should I start weaning?
Six months is the recommended age for weaning babies. If you are unable, or choose not to follow these recommendations, make sure to get individual advice about your child from your health visitor.
Why should I wait six months?
1) A baby’s digestive system is unable to cope with solids until approximately 6 months.
2) Allergies can occur if babies are weaned too early.
3) Babies can control their tongues and mouths better at 6 months.
What food should I give?
Start with puree, 1-2 teaspoons at a time when you and baby are relaxed.
